Tech Tip: Idle Timeout and Network Keepalives

Question: When I walk away from my desk, or otherwise don't use TinyTERM for several minutes, I get disconnected. Is there any way to prevent that?

Answer: This is caused by an idle timeout value set on the server. If there's no communication for a specified amount of time, the connection gets closed.

TinyTERM for Windows includes a setting to prevent this on telnet connections. To change that, edit the configuration file you're using with Notepad or another text editor. The file will have the extension .tpx; e.g., default.tpx.

Search the file for this line:

telnetkeepalive=0

The zero disables the function. If it's set to any positive number, TinyTERM will wait for that many seconds of idle time, then send a keepalive signal to the host. For example,

telnetkeepalive=300

will cause TinyTERM to wait for 300 seconds of idle time -- five minutes -- then send the keepalive. This will prevent the server from disconnecting TinyTERM if you need to step away from the PC.

Question: Does this also work for SSH connections?

Answer: This only works for telnet connections. Timeouts are handled by the host for SSH connections. In the <b>/etc/sshd_config</b> file, look for these two lines:

ClientAliveInterval
ClientAliveCountMax

The first sets how long a user can be idle before the server checks to see if the connection is still valid. The second is the number of times to perform this check before disconnecting the user. For example,

ClientAliveInterval 300
ClientAliveCountMax 3

will cause the server to check after five minutes of idle time. It'll do this three times total before closing the connection.
