Create an IBM 3270 Emulation Configuration

After selecting a new 3270 terminal emulation configuration, you'll need the connection specifics. At a minimum, you need the Hostname or IP address of the server, and the communications Protocol and Emulation the server requires.

There are no generic settings that will work for these options. Each is specific to a given server, as determined by the server administrator.

Connection Settings

First, enter a name for the connection. Then enter the Hostname or IP address and select the Protocol. The default Port is set to 23. On some systems, this value is different as an added security measure. In that case, you'll need to enter the correct Port as well.

Turn on Auto Connect to have this configuration connect automatically when TinyTERM starts. Only one connection configuration may have this set. Turning it on in one connection automatically turns it off in any other that may have Auto Connect set, regardless of the connection type.

With Auto Reconnect on, any time this session disconnects without error, such as when the user logs out, it will reconnect automatically. Turning on Ignore Connection Errors with Auto Reconnect will ignore and hide connection errors. Instead, the session will attempt to reconnect automatically.

The Prevent Disconnect switch prevents the user from disconnecting the session manually. The session only disconnects when the host sends the appropriate signal.

Enable HTE causes this session to connect via proxy as defined in the Host TE Proxy settings. With Persist HTE Session also enabled, the host proxy maintains the connection to the server, even if TinyTERM loses connection to the proxy server.

Terminal Settings

Select the specific 3270 Emulation required by your host system and application. Four are available:

  • IBM 3278-2 (24X80)
  • IBM 3278-3 (32X80)
  • IBM 3278-4 (43X80)
  • IBM 3278-5 (27X132)

Enter the logical unit name if needed in the LU Name field.

The Pre Scan Text and Post Scan Text allow you to enter text strings to be sent to the host automatically when a scan is performed. The Pre Scan Text is sent before the scanned data, and the Post Scan Text is sent after. If only a carriage return is needed, the Scan Sends CR switch provides that, in addition to any Post Scan Text.

Turn on Hide App Bar to prevent the application title bar from displaying at the top of the screen. A small down arrow at upper right of the emulation screen will bring it back for three seconds in this case.

Destructive Backspace determines the action of the ⌫ key. When off, the key moves the cursor left, but does not clear the text it passes over. With the switch on, characters are cleared from the screen as the cursor backspaces over them.

Underline Fields causes all data entry fields available on screen to be underlined, whether or not they normally would be.

Close on disconnect will cause TinyTERM to close automatically when this session is disconnected, either by the user or by the server. It overrides the Auto Reconnect switch.

Prevent Field Overrun ends data entry without error when the current field can't accept any more characters. This includes data that is pasted or scanned into the field.

Enable Fixed Dimensions keeps the set number of rows and columns visible at all times. This keeps the same screen area visible at all times and prevents pinch zoom from functioning.

Turning on Preserve Scale prevents changes to the screen size caused by updating the number of rows and columns in the emulator. This maintains the display at a constant size, regardless of other input. Pinch zoom still works in this mode, though.

Silence Bell turns off emulator sounds triggered by the mainframe.

Numeric Field Override allows fields designated as numeric only to accept all characters instead.

System Key Bell turns on sound when a system key is pressed. This does not affect alphanumeric keys.

Show Busy Indicator turns on a visual signal when the host is busy processing a command. The indicator clears when the processing completes.

The Color Settings determine the default colors used for various 3270 field types.

Saving the Configuration

When finished, tap the back arrow to save the configuration and return to the main TinyTERM screen. Or tap the Connect button to save the configuration and connect immediately.

Once a configuration is saved, you can launch it by selecting the name from the TinyTERM configuration screen.
