Century Internet Services Was Unable to Install a Link

Monday, March 26th, 2007

When you see this error, TinyTERM Plus was installed on your PC. However, it did not recognize Windows 2000 or XP as it should have, and so installed files appropriate only to Windows 95, 98 or Me.

To get rid of the error, click on Start | Run and enter:

regedit

in the dialog, then click OK. In the Registry Editor, go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Check the Run, RunOnce and RunOnceEx keys. If you find nar_inet.exe in any of the three, delete that line. That will get rid of the error. You can then delete the directory C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM\NetUtils, or uninstall and reinstall TinyTERM if you prefer.

Installing Over a Previous Version

Monday, March 26th, 2007

It is sometimes possible to install TinyTERM or TERM over a previous version of the same software. Bu in general, Century Software, Inc., recommends you uninstall prior versions first. If the version of TERM or TinyTERM you have does not include an uninstall program, please see our instructions on uninstalling manually.

Insufficient Disk Space to Complete the Install

Monday, March 26th, 2007

TinyTERM and TERM make use of the local system temporary directories during install. If those directories contain too many files, even if there is enough overall disk space otherwise, then you can get an error about insufficient disk space. To get rid of the error, go to the directories defined by your system variables TEMP and TMP, and delete everything you can from them. (On Windows systems, empty the Recycle Bin after doing this.) Then start the install again.

Unattended Install

Monday, March 26th, 2007

TinyTERM version 4.20 and higher can be installed unattended. For versions 4.20-4.43, the document that describes the process is available here. It’s also installed with TinyTERM, though it’s not available on all CDs without installing first.

The first releases of the AutoInstT.rtf file do contain errors when installing the Network Utilities included in TinyTERM Plus. The document linked above corrects those errors.

For TinyTERM version 4.53, an MSI install file is available instead for customers with a current maintenance contract. Contact Technical Support at +1-801-268-3088 ext 5, or by email at support@centurysoftware.com.

Error (1817) Failed to Undo Existing Registration

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

When you see this error, go to Start | Programs | Startup. If there is a “Century repair” item there, delete it.

Next, open a command prompt. At that prompt go to the C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM directory. Run these two commands, one at a time:

tt /unregister
tt /register

If that does not solve the error, uninstall TinyTERM. Delete the C:\Program Files\Century folder, then reboot your PC and reinstall TinyTERM .

Create a Desktop Shortcut

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

TinyTERM and TERM for Windows do not create desktop shortcuts as part of installation. However, you can create one manually.

The easiest way to do this is to click on Start | Programs | TinyTERM. Using your right mouse button from there, drag the “TinyTERM Emulator” icon out to the desktop. You’ll get a popup menu. Select “Copy here” from that menu, and the shortcut will automatically be created.

You can also create the shortcut step by step. Right-click on the desktop and select “New” from the popup menu, then “Shortcut”. In the box labeled, “Type the location of the item:” enter the following for TinyTERM version 4:

“C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM\tt.exe” -PL3 default

Replace PL3 with the first three letters of your serial number. Replace default with the name of the .tpx configuration file you’re using. The quotation marks and dash are required.

Click Next to enter a name for the shortcut. Click Finish, and the shortcut will appear on your desktop.

There are, of course, other ways to create a desktop shortcut in Windows. These methods are convenient for most PCs.

Network Utilities Install Fails with Error -115

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

This error during a TinyTERM Plus install means that one or more files could not be overwritten. If you don’t need the NetUtils portion of TinyTERM, you can safely ignore the message.

If you do need NetUtils, copy the TinyTERM install directory to your local hard drive. Then reboot the PC in safe mode before running the install from the local copy. That will bypass any application preventing a file overwrite.

This error was resolved in TinyTERM Plus 4.60 by switching to an MSI installation.

Use Administrator Login for Install

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

On operating systems with a root or administrator login, always use that login or one with equivalent rights to install TinyTERM or TERM. When the install requires a reboot, login as an administrator when the reboot is complete, also.

Otherwise, TinyTERM’s and TERM’s installs can’t access the files and registry settings they need. Errors during install or when running the emulator will happen if this isn’t done.

Error 1810 URL Protocol Handler Could Not Be Set

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

This error happens during install of TinyTERM version 4 on Windows 95. It means that Internet Explorer version 4 or higher is not installed. For normal desktop usage, this error can be ignored.

TinyTERM accomplishes web-to-host connections using an ActiveX control. That control requires Internet Explorer 4 at a minimum. If an earlier version of Internet Explorer is installed, TinyTERM will not be able to open in the browser. However, it will still function as a standalone application.
