Manual Install of TERM for UNIX

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

To install TERM for UNIX manually, login as root or a user with equivalent permissions. Then do the following:

  1. Create the directory where TERM will reside:

    md /usr/term

  2. Copy the install files into this directory.
  3. Extract (untar) the files. For example:

    tar xvf cmdfile1.tar
    tar xvf cmdfile2.tar
    tar xvf cmdfile3.tar
    tar xvf termi6.tar

Replace termi6.tar with the correct install file. You may not have the separate cmdfile#.tar files either, depending on your flavor of UNIX.

  4. Move the term, callin and callout files to /usr/bin:

    mv term callin callout /usr/bin

  5. Change permissions on the moved files:

    chmod 555 /usr/bin/term
    chmod 4755 /usr/bin/callin /usr/bin/callout

  6. Brand the TERM executable with the command:

    ./brand /usr/bin/term

Enter your serial number and activation key when prompted to do so. Please remember that both are case-sensitive.

The install will be complete at this point.

  3. Go into the Century directory and run marlpd manually.

Invalid Windows Platform

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

This error happens installing TinyTERM 3.x to Windows 3.1. It means there is a 32-bit driver loading somewhere in Windows.

To bypass the error, you will need to locate the 32-bit driver causing the problem, then disable it until TinyTERM is installed. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do this. Check the documentation on other installed software to see which program might be causing this.

Install Stops

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

If the install stops, or if it causes the PC to hang on reboot, there are a few steps to try. Do the following one at a time, testing the install after each.

  • Close all background tasks, especially virus and spyware scanners. Other Internet-enabled software should be closed as well.
  • Run Scandisk to clean up any disk errors.
  • Empty the Recycle Bin to free disk space. Delete all temporary files as well.
  • Defragment the hard drive. This one should be saved for last, as it will take some time.

If none of these work, locate the zipse directory on the TinyTERM CD. Copy the file ttpl.exe from that directory to your hard drive. Then boot the PC in safe mode and install from that copied file.

If you need the Network Utilities, also copy netutils.exe from the same directory. Run it immediately after the ttpl.exe program finishes.
