ZMODEM and TinyTERM 3.3

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Using TinyTERM 3.3 and the ZMODEM file transfer protocol, you may find a situation where you can download a file from the host to the PC, but not upload from the PC to the host. When that happens, do the following in TinyTERM:

  • Click on the Transfer button.
  • Enter the required information.
  • Select ZMODEM as the transfer protocol, if it’s not already set.
  • Click the Settings button.
  • Place a check in the box next to Automatic Data Compression.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • Set the ZMODEM/WTERMCRC Packet Size to 4096 or 8192.
  • Set the ZMODEM/WTERMCRC Window Size to match the packet size.
  • Click OK twice.

You should now be able to transfer files both directions.

If the PC is using the NTFS file system, the above instructions may not work when downloading files. It’s not just TinyTERM that’s affected by this. ZMODEM does not always write well to NTFS drives, regardless of the application you’re using.

TinyTERM 3.3 Causes a GPF on Windows 98

Friday, March 30th, 2007

When this happens, it means the original install did not complete properly. You will need to do the following:

  • Manually uninstall all Tiny Term products.
  • Reboot the PC.
  • Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get the task manager. End all tasks except Systray and Explorer.
  • Install TinyTERM again.
  • When prompted to restart the computer, select No.
  • Click Yes and OK on all other dialog boxes. Some dialog boxes may be behind others, so make sure to close these windows carefully.

File Save Problems in TinyTERM 3.3

Friday, March 30th, 2007

When using TinyTERM 3.3 on Windows 95 or higher, files may be lost after saving them. This can include scripts, .tap connection files, or files downloaded from a remote system.

The problem is long directory name support in TinyTERM 3.3. By default it installs to a subdirectory of C:\Program Files, but it doesn’t fully recognize the space in the path name. So when it tries to save, it uses any spaces in the path as file name separators. This causes files to be written to incorrect directories, or even to be renamed.

The solution is to uninstall TinyTERM, then reboot the PC and reinstall. On reinstall, change the directory path to a classic 8.3 name, such as C:\Century.

Printer Locks Partway Through a Print Job

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Using Tiny Term version 3.3 on Windows 98, the printer might lock up after printing three or four pages of a report. Once it locks up, you’ll have to end task TinyTERM to clear it.

To fix this, go to TinyTERM’s printer settings and check the box marked “Flush output buffer.” This will flush the printer buffer periodically, preventing the printer from locking up.

Install Asks for Boot Drive

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

The TinyTERM install program may ask for the drive the PC boots from, and will default to C:\. If you click OK, it will ask again, this time specifying C:\CONFIG.SYS. Every time you click OK, another CONFIG.SYS is added to the directory path.

When this happens, it means there is no CONFIG.SYS file on C:. TinyTERM does not do anything with the file, but the install will not proceed if it’s not there.

To bypass this, cancel the TinyTERM install. In the root of the C: drive, create an empty CONFIG.SYS file. Then start the TinyTERM install again. It will proceed normally.

Multiple TinyTERM Shortcuts in Startup

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

If you put two or more shortcuts to TinyTERM in your Windows Startup group, only one will launch. You’ll see buttons for both on the taskbar, but one button will disappear.

Once all applications have finished loading, minimize all of them. The second TinyTERM window will then open. There is no workaround or patch for this behavior.

Multithreading

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Both TinyTERM version 4.x and all versions of TERM for UNIX are multithreaded applications. They will take advantage of multiple processors as well.

However, multithreading and multiprocessor support are handled by the operating system. So TinyTERM and TERM for UNIX will only use multithreading and multiple processors if the OS allocates the resources accordingly.

Error Creating Registry Entry

Monday, March 26th, 2007

This error during a Windows install of TERM or TinyTERM always indicates a problem accessing the registry. You must have local PC administrator rights to install. Without that, TinyTERM will not install or run properly.

Failed to Undo Existing Registry Entry

Monday, March 26th, 2007

This Windows error usually comes up after logging in. To get rid of it, go to Start | Programs | Startup. Delete the “Century Repair” icon there. You may need to delete it through:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

or its equivalent instead.

Setup Is Unable to Uncompress and Copy All of the Program Files Needed

Monday, March 26th, 2007

This error only happens on Windows PCs. It means the temporary directories are overloaded with InstallShield files.

To fix the problem, go to the temporary directories specified by the TEMP and TMP environment variables. Delete any directory in them that starts with _istmp. Empty the Recycle Bin. TinyTERM will install properly after that.
