When you see this error, TinyTERM Plus was installed on your PC. However, it did not recognize Windows 2000 or XP as it should have, and so installed files appropriate only to Windows 95, 98 or Me.
To get rid of the error, click on Start | Run and enter:
regedit
in the dialog, then click OK. In the Registry Editor, go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
Check the Run, RunOnce and RunOnceEx keys. If you find nar_inet.exe in any of the three, delete that line. That will get rid of the error. You can then delete the directory C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM\NetUtils, or uninstall and reinstall TinyTERM if you prefer.

This error means one of two things:
- Your version of TinyTERM is too old for your version of Windows. The version of TAPI is therefore too new for TinyTERM to use. Upgrading TinyTERM is the only solution.
- TinyTERM has a specific incompatibility with the modem. Update the modem drivers in this case.
If both TinyTERM and the modem drivers are up to date, you will need to dial the modem manually.

On Windows 95, 98 or Me, the currently active window can lose focus when the LPD server receives a print request. The server has to have focus briefly to initiate the print job, especially if it’s the first LPD request received since Windows was started, but it doesn’t always return focus properly.
When this happens, create a new icon in the Startup group of your Start menu. Link the to C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM\NetUtils\marlpd32.exe. Change the directory as appropriate, but make sure marlpd32.exe is loaded from your Startup group. That’s the application taking focus, so if it’s started with Windows, you shouldn’t see your main window lose focus again.

The LPD Server in Century Internet Services will sometimes hang when you add a printer. There is no patch for this. But you can just kill the process from Task Manager. The printer will still be added.

Century Internet Services includes an LPD (line printer daemon) server. However, it only runs on Windows 3.1 or higher. In TinyTERM 4.x, it only runs on Windows 95, 98 and Me.
To put a Century LPD Server on Windows NT 4, 2000, XP or Vista, you will need TinyTERM Plus 4.30 or higher. No prior release includes an LPD server.

If you need to print to a Windows network printer from TinyTERM, but for whatever reason can’t select the printer, you can print directly to the device instead. Configure TinyTERM to print “Direct to device” or select DEVICE from the drop-down list. For the file or device name, enter:
\server\printer
Replace “server” with the name of the Windows print server. Replace “printer” with the share name for the desired printer. You may need to contact your system administrator to get those names. Most Windows network printers will accept this configuration.
For printers that will not, you may be able to capture the printer to an LPT port. Instructions for this are on Microsoft’s website. By operating system, the links are:

- Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
- Double-click on the Network icon.
- Click on Century Internet Services in the list, then click the Properties button.
- Select the Options tab.
- De-select the option “Start Century Internet Services at Windows Startup.”
- Click OK, then click OK again.

This error is a protection error. It means the user doesn’t have permission to access the file default.tpx or the directory it’s in.
At a minimum, all users must be able to read the TinyTERM install directory, normally C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM. To make changes to default.tpx or any other file in that directory, they will also need write permissions.
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, it may not be possible to change the directory permissions, even after setting the User Account Control (UAC) setting to its minimum security level. In that case, the user will need to save settings to a different directory, one with write permissions. The user’s desktop or Documents folder are common choices.

TinyTERM and TERM for Windows do not create desktop shortcuts as part of installation. However, you can create one manually.
The easiest way to do this is to click on Start | Programs | TinyTERM. Using your right mouse button from there, drag the “TinyTERM Emulator” icon out to the desktop. You’ll get a popup menu. Select “Copy here” from that menu, and the shortcut will automatically be created.
You can also create the shortcut step by step. Right-click on the desktop and select “New” from the popup menu, then “Shortcut”. In the box labeled, “Type the location of the item:” enter the following for TinyTERM version 4:
“C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM\tt.exe” -PL3 default
Replace PL3 with the first three letters of your serial number. Replace default with the name of the .tpx configuration file you’re using. The quotation marks and dash are required.
Click Next to enter a name for the shortcut. Click Finish, and the shortcut will appear on your desktop.
There are, of course, other ways to create a desktop shortcut in Windows. These methods are convenient for most PCs.
