Extra Data Found at End of Record

Monday, April 9th, 2007

When using FTP to transfer a text file to an AS/400 system, you may see the message, “Extra data found at the end of the record.” Only one line of the file will transfer in this case. This happens when the transfer mode is set to binary. To send a text file, you must set the mode to ASCII. It will then successfully transfer the file.

Century FTP Client Won’t Connect

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

If the Century FTP Client won’t connect to the server, check the following:

  • Make sure you do not have multiple TCP/IP items listed in your Network Neighborhood. If you do, remove all but the correct one, unless each TCP/IP entry has a known purpose.
  • TCP/IP may have become corrupt on the PC. Write down all the TCP/IP settings and verify that they are correct for the PC. Then remove TCP/IP from the network properties, reboot the PC, and TCP/IP back in. Reboot the PC again if so prompted.
  • Create a hosts file containing the IP Address and host name of the FTP server.

FTP Client Missing in TinyTERM Plus 3.3

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

After installing TinyTERM Plus or TERM Professional version 3.3 from the October 1998 CD, you may not see an option for the FTP Client, LPR Printing or NFS Server, though they should be installed. (NFS is only installed with TERM Professional.)

To resolve this, manually uninstall the current product and reboot. Next, install TERM Professional using the 30-day evaluation. Make sure that the correct components are check-marked.

We also suggest you change the TinyTERM install path. It defaults to C:\Program Files\Century. Change the path to C:\Century (delete Program Files).

Once installation is complete, run the License Manager and upgrade your license. You should now have FTP Client, LPR Printing and NFS Server.

Copying Multiple Directories via FTP

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

The Century FTP Client included in TinyTERM Plus versions prior to 4.40 can only copy one directory at a time. However, the SecureFT application included in TinyTERM Plus versions 4.40 and higher can copy multiple directories in a single operation.

TCP Ports

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

Any network connection requires a TCP port be open and available on the server. There is an excellent list of common TCP ports at www.iss.net.

If you are using a non-standard port in TERM, you can specify the correct port by adding to the address, after a colon. For example:

term -l telnet:192.168.0.1:1023

will cause TERM to use telnet to connect to port 1023, rather than using the default port of 23. TinyTERM for DOS can also be configured this way.

In TinyTERM for Windows, you will need to go into the advanced setup for the telnet, SSH or SSL/TLS protocol. That dialog box will include a port number that can be edited.

At this writing, no file transfer protocol has this capability. This includes FTP in the emulator, as well as the protocols available in the Century FTP Client or SecureFT. The NFS client and server likewise cannot be changed.

Century FTP Client Can’t See Files on a Host Using FACL

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

In the Century FTP Client, if the Set_FACL command has been used to restrict access to files via a File Access Control List, the FTP Client cannot see these files on the server. To resolve this problem you will need to replace the ftp32.exe file. You can download a patch for this here.

To use the patch, locate the existing ftp32.exe file in C:\Program Files\Century\TinyTERM\NetUtils. Rename it as a backup. Copy the patch file Ftp32_FACL.exe into that same directory. Then rename the patch as ftp32.exe. The next time you start the Century FTP Client, the patch will be in effect.

This patch applies to TinyTERM Plus versions 4.10 and earlier. Later versions of TinyTERM Plus incorporate the patch.

Empty Remote Directory in the FTP Client

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Some FTP servers will show an empty directory in the Century FTP Client or SecureFT. This happens when the server uses a different directory item structure than the client’s default. The following steps will change the default in the Century FTP Client:

  1. Open the Century FTP Client. It displays the configuration dialog automatically.
  2. Click the View/Sort tab.
  3. Set the Directory Item Structure value by clicking the Set Default button.
  4. Edit the Directory Item Structure value for the required format.

The steps for SecureFT are (also available as a screencast):

  1. Go to the Edit menu and select Setup.
  2. Click the Directory Structure tab.
  3. Click the item under Active Items you want to change.
  4. Click the Push button to move it to the Inactive Items. Or use the up and down arrows on the left to change the item’s position in the list.

The required format may be found by connecting to the FTP server using a command-line client, such as the one included in Windows. After connecting, type “dir” at the prompt for a directory item listing. The default format used by the graphical FTP client is:

-rwxrw-rw- 1 owner group 32 May 19 21:35 file.txt

This corresponds to Directory Item Structure:

ATTRIBUTE UNKNOWN USER GROUP SIZE MON DATE TIME FILENAME

Compare the listing on the FTP server with the listing above and change the order as needed, removing any directory items not displayed. The most common change needed is to remove the GROUP item.

“504 Socket Connect Error” from Century FTP Client

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

This error happens when using the Century FTP Client that came with TinyTERM Plus versions 4.11 and earlier over a VPN. It’s fixed with the patch available here.

To use the patch, locate the existing ftpslave.exe file on your PC. Rename it as a backup, then copy this file into the same directory. The next time you start the Century FTP Client, the patch will be in effect.

This patch does not work with SecureFT.

CR 100, fixed in TinyTERM Plus 4.12 .
