WTERMCRC and ZMODEM Transfers Fail in TERM for Linux

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Using TERM-to-TERM server mode transfer, download a file to your Linux PC. Nothing transfers. The same is true for uploading to TERM in server mode using term -1x or term -2x. Both manual and scripted file transfers fail. This works using TinyTERM connecting to Linux.

ZMODEM Disables ixon Flow Control

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

As soon as the download process starts, the flow control on the tty port changes. When TERM brings up its file transfer window, XON is disabled and XOFF is enabled.  This happens regardless of the tty port settings. It also ignores the settings in the .termsys file.

Can’t Upload to Latest ZMODEM

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

Download and compile the latest version of the ZMODEM software. You can use sz to send files to TinyTERM readily.

However, uploading to rz fails. It constantly resyncs, rather than completing the transfer.

32-Bit ZMODEM

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

TinyTERM 4.41 and higher have an option to use 32-bit ZMODEM for file transfer, in addition to the older 16-bit ZMODEM. This has not been added to TERM for UNIX yet.

Protocols Missing from AIX Server.cmd

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

The server.cmd script included with TERM for AIX does not list the ZMODEM or WTERMCRC file transfer protocols. So if you run:

term -x server

those protocols are unavailable from the menus. To work around this, run TERM in server mode instead:

WTERMCRC: term -1x
ZMODEM: term -2x

ZMODEM Drops Connection During Transfer

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

This is a timing issue. To resolve it, do the following:

  1. Edit the .termsys or TERM.SYS file.
  2. Double the values for RTIME, STIME and ITIME.
  3. Save the file.

Can’t Find FTZMOD.DLL

Friday, April 6th, 2007

After upgrading from TERM for DOS 7.0 to version 7.2, trying to transfer a file using ZMODEM will give the error, “Can’t find FTZMOD.DLL.” You will need to go to the Century directory and rename the file FTZMODEM.DLL to FTZMOD.DLL.

Slow ZMODEM or WTERMCRC File Transfer

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

When file transfer is extremely slow using either of these protocols, you may need to increase the window and packet sizes. To do that:

  1. From TinyTERM’s Edit menu, select File Transfer Properties,
    or
From the File menu, select File Transfer.
  2. Click either the Setup or Settings button.
  3. Double the value in the “Zmodem/WTERMCRC window size” field. If you are using a serial or modem connection, do not set the value higher than the current connection speed.
  4. Set the “Zmodem/WTERMCRC packet size” to match the window size.
  5. Click OK in each dialog to close them, one at a time.
  6. Save the session.

This configures the transfer settings for the best results for your connection speed.

ZMODEM and TinyTERM 3.3

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Using TinyTERM 3.3 and the ZMODEM file transfer protocol, you may find a situation where you can download a file from the host to the PC, but not upload from the PC to the host. When that happens, do the following in TinyTERM:

  • Click on the Transfer button.
  • Enter the required information.
  • Select ZMODEM as the transfer protocol, if it’s not already set.
  • Click the Settings button.
  • Place a check in the box next to Automatic Data Compression.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • Set the ZMODEM/WTERMCRC Packet Size to 4096 or 8192.
  • Set the ZMODEM/WTERMCRC Window Size to match the packet size.
  • Click OK twice.

You should now be able to transfer files both directions.

If the PC is using the NTFS file system, the above instructions may not work when downloading files. It’s not just TinyTERM that’s affected by this. ZMODEM does not always write well to NTFS drives, regardless of the application you’re using.
