When replacing a dedicated (dumb) terminal with a PC, TinyTERM version may not connect over the known good serial connection. This usually means you need a null modem adapter on one end of the cable.
On a terminal, the pins line up 2-2 and 3-3. A PC uses the same hardware as the server, rather than the reversed version common to terminals. Thus, the pins need to line up 3-2 and 2-3. A null modem adapter corrects this without requiring a new data cable.

While using TinyTERM 4.03, the keyboard may lock up, causing TinyTERM to stop responding to your typing. Moving the mouse frees up the keyboard.
This is a known issue with that version of TinyTERM. There is no patch. The only solution is to use a newer version of TinyTERM.

If running a transparent print job causes TinyTERM to disconnect the modem, try printing to a file instead. This bypasses the Windows printer manager, which may be interfering.
If that does not help, TinyTERM has gotten corrupted. Uninstall it, then delete the directory. Reboot and reinstall TinyTERM.

When another Windows application becomes active, TinyTERM will lose focus. If this is happening while you’re using TinyTERM, check for other applications that might be running in the background.
For example, you may have email software that checks your account regularly. When it checks, TinyTERM loses focus. In a situation like this, consult your software documentation to see if the behavior can be changed.

If a transparent print job will not print until you close TinyTERM, you need to spool the print jobs. In TinyTERM version 4.13 or higher, open the Printer Setup dialog and check theĀ Spool Print Jobs box. In TinyTERM versions 4.00-4.12, there are a few additional steps:
- From TinyTERM’ File menu, select Printer Setup.
- Select the To Windows printer option.
- Check the Manually Stop Print Jobs box.
- Check the Stop on Keypress box.
- Click OK to close the Printer Setup dialog box.
Earlier versions of TinyTERM do not have this option, nor does any version of TERM.

This error means the IP address or hostname supplied for the connection is incorrect. Test the connection using the ping command from a system prompt. If you receive errors, verify the address or hostname you’re using.
If ping works, try to telnet to the host from a command prompt. Errors from this command indicate possible problems with the network or TC/IP configuration on your PC.

This error comes up when incorrect information is entered in the Telnet terminal type line of TinyTERM’s Session Properties. Erase that setting or the netterm setting to get rid of the error.

This is an InstallShield error. To fix it, do the following:
- Go to the directory C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield.
- Locate the subdirectory Professional in that directory and rename it. For example, change the folder name to profess_.
NOTE: Renaming this folder will not affect your PC’s functionality in any way.
- After renaming the folder, run the TinyTERM install again.

Most Century Software, Inc., products have file transfer capabilities. They can send and receive files using several common protocols, as well as the proprietary TERMCRC and WTERMCRC protocols. But all the protocols have some common requirements:
- An active connection. FTP transfers create TCP/IP connections on the fly. For any other protocol, you must already be connected to the remote system before starting a transfer.
- A valid source file name and directory path. If the name of the file to be transferred or the directory its in is misspelled, or if the file does not exist in the specified directory, the transfer will fail.
- A valid receive directory. If the directory where the file should go does not exist, the results are unpredictable. A file of the wrong name may be created, a new directory may be created, or it may not transfer at all.
- A file transfer application running on both the sending and receiving system. TinyTERM and TERM count as file transfer applications. When sending a file to a remote system, that system must be running an application that will receive the file. Likewise, the host system must send the file if you are trying to receive it through TERM or TinyTERM.
If these conditions are not met, the transfer will fail. The exact failure depends on what’s missing.
Note that there are no limits to the size of files that can be transferred. Larger files will take longer to transfer, of course, so plan accordingly when using a serial or modem connection.
